About this recipe

This bowl leans cozy but still keeps things vibrant. Smoky grilled tempeh, caramelized veggies, and bold Korean-inspired flavors come together to feel like comfort food. If you’re looking for grilled tempeh recipes that don’t feel like an afterthought, this one delivers serious BBQ Korean recipe energy without the meat.

Tips & Tricks

  • Steam the tempeh first. Before you throw it on the grill, simmer or steam it for 10 minutes. It softens the texture and helps your BBQ tempeh soak up more flavor.
  • Don’t rush the char. Tempeh grilled properly should have golden, slightly crisp edges. Let it sit undisturbed on the grill for a few minutes before flipping.
  • Balance the bowl. For the best tempeh meals, mix warm grilled elements with something fresh, crisp cucumbers, quick pickled onions, or shredded cabbage to keep it feeling like true Korean comfort food, not just another vegan tempeh recipe.

ingredients

12 ounces tempeh, sliced into ½-inch strips
½ cup Kikkoman® Teriyaki BBQ Sauce Korean BBQ
1 small red onion, sliced
1 bunch broccolini
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil

For Serving
2 cups cooked white or brown rice
Sesame seeds
Fresh cilantro

directions

  1. Heat grill to medium-high. Lightly grease grates with cooking oil. Brush tempeh on both sides with Korean BBQ sauce.
  2. Grill 3–4 minutes per side until heated through and lightly charred. Brush with more sauce while grilling for extra glaze.
  3. Toss onion, broccolini, and bell pepper in olive oil. Grill until tender and lightly charred, about 6–8 minutes, turning once.
  4. Divide rice among bowls. Top with grilled tempeh and vegetables.
  5. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped cilantro. Drizzle with additional Korean BBQ sauce.

THE STORY OF SOY SAUCE

Even people who love soy sauce and use it all the time are often surprised to learn what it is and how it’s made. We make ours from just four simple ingredients—water, soybeans, wheat, and salt. Those ingredients are transformed through a traditional brewing process—much like making wine or beer—that has remained unchanged for centuries.
