ingredients

4 cups water
1 pound cactus pads (about 6), thorns removed and sliced in strips
1 cup flour
1 large egg, beaten
1 cup Kikkoman® Panko Bread Crumbs
1½ cups vegetable oil
Salt to taste

directions

  1. Bring water to a boil in large saucepan over medium heat. Add cactus strips and blanche for 4 minutes. Quickly and carefully drain and let cool.
  2. On a working surface, arrange three shallow bowls and fill one with flour, one with beaten egg and one with panko.
  3. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat.
  4. Working with 2-3 cactus strips at a time, dredge in flour, then egg, then coat with panko breadcrumbs. Using tongs, place them in hot oil and quickly turn to fry evenly; about 3-5 seconds on each side or until golden brown. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Season with salt and serve with crema or a creamy-spicy sauce.

THE STORY OF SOY SAUCE

Even people who love soy sauce and use it all the time are often surprised to learn what it is and how it’s made. We make ours from just four simple ingredients—water, soybeans, wheat, and salt. Those ingredients are transformed through a traditional brewing process—much like making wine or beer—that has remained unchanged for centuries.
