ingredients

¼ cup unsweetened cacao powder
3 tablespoons cornstarch
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup + ½ cup chocolate chips, divided
2 large eggs
⅔ cup light brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons Kikkoman® Soy Sauce (or use Kikkoman® Gluten-Free Soy Sauce for gluten-free brownies)

directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF and lightly grease an 8×8 baking pan with butter or cooking spray. In a small bowl, stir together cacao powder and cornstarch.
  2. Melt butter and 1 cup of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl, stirring occasionally until smooth.
  3. Use a hand mixer or standing mixer to beat eggs on high speed for 1 minute, until pale yellow.
  4. Add brown sugar to eggs and beat 1 minute longer. Add melted butter and chocolate mixture, vanilla extract, and soy sauce (regular or gluten-free). Beat until just combined.
  5. Gradually beat cacao powder mixture into wet ingredients until moist. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool brownies completely at room temperature before slicing. Brownies will firm as they cool.

THE STORY OF SOY SAUCE

Even people who love soy sauce and use it all the time are often surprised to learn what it is and how it’s made. We make ours from just four simple ingredients—water, soybeans, wheat, and salt. Those ingredients are transformed through a traditional brewing process—much like making wine or beer—that has remained unchanged for centuries.
