About
This teriyaki caramelized onion and apple grilled cheese sandwich takes comfort food to the next level. Sweet caramelized onions, crisp apples, melty cheese, and a touch of teriyaki flavor come together for the perfect balance of savory and sweet. If you’re searching for gourmet grilled cheese recipes or easy lunch ideas with bold flavor, this sandwich is a must-try.
Tips & Tricks
- Swap Japanese milk bread with brioche or challah for a similarly rich texture.
- If the bread browns too quickly, finish the sandwiches in a warm oven until the cheese melts.
- Pair with tomato soup or a simple salad for an easy lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
For Caramelized Onions
- 1 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
- 1 Sweet Onion, thinly sliced
- 2 Tbsp Kikkoman® Teriyaki BBQ Sauce, Original
For Sandwiches
- 2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter, room temperature
- 4 slices Japanese Milk Bread
- 4 slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1/2 Honeycrisp Apple, thinly sliced
Directions
- To caramelize onions, heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions and cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring often, until almost fully caramelized. Add Teriyaki BBQ Sauce and simmer for another 10-15 minutes until onions are soft and jammy and sauce is almost completely dry.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread. Layer the non-buttered sides with 1 slice of cheese, a single layer of slightly overlapping apple slices, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and another slice of bread, butter side up.
- Heat a pan on low heat and place the sandwiches, butter side down, cook for 5-6 minutes per side or until golden brown and melty.
