At Kikkoman, we’re obsessed with teriyaki! After all we helped define its flavor in the US when we launched the first bottled teriyaki sauce back in 1961. Our famous teriyaki combines our traditionally brewed soy sauce with wine, sugar, vinegar and a proprietary blend of seasonings to create an all-purpose sauce and condiment that’s perfect for marinating, grilling, broiling and roasting. Try it in your next stir-fry or dressing, or keep a bottle in your kitchen and you’ll always be ready to turn last night’s veggies, rice, chicken, or whatever’s in the fridge, into today’s delicious dinner.
Teriyaki was born in Japan centuries ago as a simple mixture of umami-rich soy sauce and mirin, a Japanese sweet cooking wine. The appetizing sheen the sauce takes on after it’s cooked inspired its name—a combination of the words teri (luster) and yaki (grilled or broiled). Eventually, Japanese-Americans in Hawaii added ingredients like fresh ginger, brown sugar, pineapple juice and green onions to the original soy-mirin base.
