Description

For centuries, soy sauce has been a cornerstone of Asian cuisine, adding an umami depth and salty complexity to countless dishes. But its journey to becoming a staple in American kitchens is a story of cultural exchange, culinary innovation, and the dedication of a single company: Kikkoman.

Kikkoman's history with soy sauce stretches back over 360 years, beginning in 1603 Japan. Over generations, the company honed the traditional brewing process of using soybeans, wheat, water, and salt, allowing natural fermentation to unlock the rich and complex flavors for which Kikkoman soy sauce is renowned.

The introduction of Kikkoman soy sauce to the United States began in the mid-20th century, a time when Asian flavors were still relatively unfamiliar to the American palate. Kikkoman, recognizing the potential for a wider audience to appreciate its unique soy sauce, embarked on a mission to educate American consumers about this versatile ingredient.

The journey wasn't without its challenges. In those early days, soy sauce was often seen as an exotic and unfamiliar condiment. But Kikkoman persevered, highlighting the versatility of soy sauce and its ability to enhance everyday dishes like grilled meats, stir-fries, and even pasta sauces.

Through innovative marketing campaigns and collaborations with chefs, Kikkoman gradually established its soy sauce as a pantry staple in American homes. Today, Kikkoman remains the leading brand of soy sauce in the United States, a testament to the company's commitment to quality, tradition, and introducing new generations to the world of umami flavor.

Product FAQs

Once opened, the soy sauce will start to lose its freshness and the flavor will begin to change. By refrigerating the sauce, the flavor and quality will remain at their peak for a longer period. As long as no water or other ingredients have been added to the soy sauce, it would not spoil if it had not been refrigerated.
Kikkoman Soy Sauces contain greater than 2% alcohol by volume. The alcohol is a result of the fermentation process.  Like wine or beer, our soy sauces are brewed and they are made from wheat, soybeans, salt and water. During fermentation, the wheat starches are broken down to sugars and part of the sugar is changed into alcohol.
The all-purpose Kikkoman Soy Sauce and the Kikkoman Less Sodium Soy Sauce are brewed at the Kikkoman Foods, Inc. plant in Walworth, WI where there are no peanuts or tree nuts ingredients used. Please check the back of your label to see where the product was made.
